How To Get More Salon Clients
If you attract clients like every other salon does then you will get the same results that every other salon gets; and by industry standards that pretty poor! They say new client retention is around 17%, that means you keep 17 clients out of every 100. It’s so hard to attract new clients but you are only keeping around 2 out of 10. How much money are you wasting trying to attract clients only to lose them after one visit? One of the major reasons for this is you are attracting the wrong clients and that is hurting your business in many ways: 👉 Staff don’t like it 👉 Staff find it hard to hit targets (3x wage) 👉 Your bills stay high as your spend on advertising is high 👉 You attract clients with specials so it effect’s your profit. 👉 You just become a busy fool, your salon looks busy but there’s no money left week after week HOW CAN YOU CHANGE THIS? You need to look at what you do best. What do you enjoy doing? You need to set your salon apart from others, so clients seek you out, not the other way round. If your clients were mice, be the cheese, not the cat, we want those mice to come looking for us! Your data base has most of the answers. If you attract the right client in the first place they will be more loyal, love what you do and tell all their friends about you. 👉 Your staff will be fully booked and happy 👉 Your bank account will be full and happy 👉 Your clients will love you and be happy And of course most of your salon problems will disappear if your bank account is full. Here’s how a disgruntled client who attempted to sue me never got the thanks she deserved!
Remember when you started your business, all pumped up on adrenalin and hope? Your dream was huge, epic! Nothing was going to stand in your way, you knew exactly the sort of salon you wanted and how you were going to make magic happen. Then life, bills and staff got in the way. You’re not alone. It’s a fact that most salon owners never achieve the kind of growth that they expect, it has nothing to do with their products and services not being good enough! In many cases, their products and services are far better than most of their competitors! I remember when I opened my salon I was excited, scared and loving every minute of it. But a few years in and it all came crashing down. I received through the mail a letter from a disgruntled client who wanted to sue me. She came in on a day that I was in Manchester and I wasn’t even in the salon. She came in for a service and the staff ran out of product half way thorough, they all ran around like headless chickens made a kafuffle and the client saw it all. She used that as an excuse to sue us because she knew they used a second brand on her hair. It was so unprofessional it wasn’t funny. They behaved wrongly, but they didn’t know any better and didn’t know what to do? I looked at myself that day and realised things needed to change, I needed a system a step by step for everything in the salon, a system a 5 year old could follow. I took the responsibility out of their hands and into mine, my system. I never got around to thank that lady for the lesson she taught me, because from that day forward every little problem was solved with a system, until a problem became a challenge. I never realised that salon life could be that easy, no more hiccups and complaints (if there was it was dealt with so well, it usually won the clients over). But the astonishing thing was…… the salon takings grew. The more I systemised my salon the more clients wanted to pay me more, visit more often and told their friends about me. Get your salon busy on quiet days
Most salon owners make the mistake of relying only on NEW CLIENTS to grow their business, yet it is REPEAT BUSINESS where the real money is made. If you and your team focus on this one thing you are half way to having a very successful salon business. The rest is just using the many different ways to get your clients to come back and spend money with you. Every salon has quiet days. It’s how you tackle these quiet periods that can make the difference. Consider these 7 tips: #1 If you know when you’re quiet then advertise a special offer around these times. Offer a two for one or a FREE cut with every colour (we called ours wicked Wednesdays)v- there’s always an opportunity to up-sell by TREATMENTS and RETAIL #2 PRE BOOK clients as they leave the salon into your quiet days first. Take control and ask them, you should know your clients well enough to ask them. #3 Mums & babies, if you have room for prams, then organise a YUMMY MUMMY MORNING. A social event and hair event in one? If you’re near a school, make sure you advertise in the window as they walk past. #4 Give your best staff member (you know the one that is always fully booked) SATURDAY OFF and get them working your quiet days. #5 Exclusive offers, why not offer special deals for your FACEBOOK & TWITTER followers on quiet days. This can be a great viral marketing method if people share your offer with their friends. #6 TELL PEOPLE! Whatever you do, don’t forget to advertise it to your existing clientele via internal posters, newsletters and social media. #7 Use your own DATABASE. Your own clients. That expensive till you have is a pot of gold and is waiting for you to mine it. Some of your clients you have lost, and some may find you too expensive. Use that knowledge to entice them in and get your quiet days full first. One of the biggest Achilles heals for our industry is that we believe in the lie “If I build it they will come”. Let me tell you now, they won’t! A salon chain of 40 salons, and millions behind them shuts their doors, so will yours… You have to do great hair or beauty, service, hygiene and venue but that’s what everyone does!
