BURYING YOUR HEAD IN THE SAND DOESN’T MAKE YOUR SALON PROBLEMS INVISIBLE, IT ACTUALLY SUFFOCATES THEM!

Problems do not just go away on their own because you ignore them, they just fester until they take you to a place where you run out of choices.If you are feeling out of control? A HUGE MISTAKE I SEE SALON OWNERS MAKE IS EMPLOYING SUPERSTARS.

You know the ones, the ones that have a big clientele, rebooks through the roof and sell more retail than anyone else in the salon.If you think I’ve gone crazy or you think that this is a mistake then you need to listen on. I believe you are looking for the wrong attributes and that’s why you cannot find staff.Most salon owners that I coach seem to have the same problem, they seem to have a problem with their client retention being poor, retail sales not being good enough and low rebooks. They complain that the staff are not passionate, but what they really mean is they are not rebooking or selling retail. And a lot of salon owners find it really hard to get their staff to hit set targets because they don’t want to upset them. If you master the client satisfaction mastery, if you get this right your retail, your rebooks and your client retention will go through the roof naturally. You see clients like predictability and they like to feel comfortable and most clients do like to buy, they just don’t like being sold to.A salon that can replicate a great service time and time again will always thrive.With client retention averagely sitting at 74% many salons lose over 26% of their current clients due to inconsistent staff, unpassionate staff, de-motivated staff. The 5 Biggest Challenges That Salon Owners Face 

When you’re a salon owner, it’s easy to feel as if the problems your salon faces are unique. You’re so immersed in your daily duties and issues that you may fail to recognize that your major problems are essentially the same as what the competition is facing. In 2019, many challenges salon owners face and how you respond to these challenges will make a big difference in how successfully your salon handles them. The Seven Challenges You’re Probably Fighting Right Now. 1. Hiring New Employees Hiring new employees is a challenge many salon owners have to deal with. Part of the difficulty relates to finding good trained staff, but it also has to do with the substantial costs of bringing new employees on board.  With taxes, benefits, equipment, training, bonuses, etc, the cost of employing new employees is far greater than just the respected award wage. That’s a significant investment for salon owners that are typically strapped for cash. With salon owners taking on less apprentices over the last few years we are seeing a shortage of well trained staff now. The salons that reward and train their current staff will find it easier than other salons that do nothing. 2. Increasing Profits For salon owners with perhaps five to ten employees, increasing profits is the biggest challenge. There are any number of reasons, but usually it comes down to an inability to remain a low-cost business against the competition as your bills and wages rise you need to really take control of the numbers. Winging it at this level is dangerous 3. Growing Revenues Part of the difficulty with increasing profits is that many salons have found it hard to increase their revenues. The issue can’t necessarily be explained by a single root cause, because four things drive revenue: strategy, structure, people, and process. And many salon owners struggle in this area. 4. Managing Cash Flow Money problems in their various forms are top of most lists of salon owners woes, we all know that most salon owners hate maths and shy away from numbers. The good news is that cash flow issues are largely curable. Running a salon budget is very much like running a home budget, the key is finding one that fits your salon. 5. Staying Energized While it may not get as much publicity as Facebook marketing or staff shortages, staying energized and overcoming burnout are also big problem areas for salon owners. When the burnout sets in, the weariness with the hours and the results can lead to rash decisions about the business, including the desire to abandon it completely. In today’s world there are many challenges for the average salon owner, but what I see from salon owners is the gap between salons earning a massive amount and salon owners that are struggling is getting bigger. I called it the War Zone and it’s real. You enter the War Zone naturally as your salon grows. We call it the War Zone as most salon owners move into this zone and never get out of it. You know you are in the War Zone if you are scared to discipline your staff in case they leave and take their clients with them; you attract clients that you shouldn’t do just because you become desperate and need the money. It’s like a battle field as salons fight over clients and staff, the only way you know how to react is with money, either offering discounts to attract clients, and offering more money to attract staff. With so many salons doing this every salon owner reacts by doing it more and more. Bigger discounts to attract the clients, and offer more money to attract and keep the staff. This has a massive effect on the salons profits and it soon becomes apparent to you, the salon owner, that things are very tight on the financial front, the bills are starting to pile up to a really scary amount and you’re wondering how on earth you’re going to be able to pay them. The bills start to come fast and furious and takings take a nose dive, the staff lose their passion and morale and then the reality really hits home. The staff are NOT pulling their weight (it’s not their fault, they’re doing cheap work, with clients they don’t like, this is not what they wanted when they became a hairdresser or beautician). You get angry with them and start to pass the blame onto them. With the added pressure of staff today being more demanding and not wanting to work late nights, nor wanting to work weekends, and of course wanting more money, they too feel that they could do a better job than you and they soon feel that owning a salon themselves is a good idea, once that seed is set, the battle is lost.

Nice turnover, shame about the profit

It’s easy for salons to grow organically and turnover to increase rapidly when you are new, but the real test is how much profit you make at the end of the day. I see turnover of so many salons that on the outside looks amazing, and many from the outside would say they are crushing it but when they come to me and I get a chance to delve deeper into their numbers I see their real problems and one of them is lack of stability because the profits are not there. There are certain short cuts you can take to getting a strong mature salon. But you need to know what works and what doesn’t in an ever changing world. Taking a salon from adolescence to maturity is a no brainer, it has to be done and executed well, many salon owners try to skip the hard work that is needed to get there. Making that move may require a new learning skill. And once it has been learnt and implemented the salon will be strong for a long time. It will have strong systems and strong staff members, it’s hard to break down the two. It’s the core to any great business and once you have it, your life as a salon owner will get much easier and more predictable. But as your salon moves through adolescence, usually through rapid growth and out of control, some salon owners tend to try and skip the hard work that is needed to take their salon to the next level. You need to surround yourself with experts in their fields or learn what you can about the subjects you find hard. This is not a time to shy away from the roles you dislike, it’s time to face your demons. Take staff for instance; when things get a bit crazy, and clients are arriving by the truckload. You need staff now, and you cannot wait for your apprentice, you need help now, so you go out and find qualified staff, you test them and they are good at their craft. You hire them and the craziness eases for a while; things seem to be back under control. Then before you know it new clients slow down, regular clients don’t come back and you see gaps appearing in your appointment book. This is the silent killer as your wage bill, stock bill and other bills have increased, and now your takings are slowly decreasing. You need to act fast, money is running out and you are trying your best to stay one step ahead of the bills. You become the master of paying bills just on time. This is when cracks appear and you lose total control over your business. There are no quick fixes in this game, no ‘fad diets’ and no ‘one size fits all’. It’s a long haul game and those that realize this are the ones that stay true to their beliefs and their core values, these salon owners lives will get easier and the staff that they bring through will have been built on such values that it’s strong as an ox. Do you want to make lots of money from your salon?

Well, let me tell you a story! I have some magic beans and if you buy them and use them your salon will grow like magic. It’s that simple! You don’t need to do much at all, in fact you could even just get off the tools and count the golden eggs all day if you wanted. How does this story resonate with you? Utter rubbish? Well, let me tell you about running a successful salon. I should know I ran a few and I also help hundreds of salon owners grow their salons to a lifestyle status. There is NOT one thing that will make your salon successful. There are lots of elements that you need to do to grow your salon, to be strong like a beanstalk. You need to be able to ATTRACT attention, get your message out there and get prospective clients to know you exist. There is no point in being the best-kept secret in town. You need to then CONVERT them in to paying clients; I don’t think your landlord takes ‘Facebook likes’ as payment. And third you need to DELIVER a remarkable service. Not average, not just enough, REMARKABLE. 15% of success is based on technical ability, while the other 85% is the client experience. Master all three and your salon will grow. Or you can go and buy the latest bag of magic beans (however they are disguised)   Here’s how to do all three well. ATTRACT: new high paying clients not bargain chasers CONVERT: them into raving fans so they’re loyal to your brand. DELIVER: remarkable service and get referrals on tap Start with building your Salons Authority as clients are more savvy these days and want to go to ‘the salon expert’. A clear goal to get you to 30% and higher takings this year. The key to how many clients you need, who they are and how do you find them, will result in more money in your till. Learn ‘HOW’ to post to get you more clients, but also on making sure you have accountability systems to track that those posts and adverts get done correctly and consistently. BRANDING your salon is a MUST to get prospective clients to believe in your story. Then you need to work on your ‘CORE STORY’. As you are aware old style marketing just doesn’t cut it with the new savvy client. You need to learn how to get clients to stay loyal to you and also learn the secrets to getting clients to visit more often. This keep in touch strategy can increase takings by a whopping $50,000 in a year. Client Satisfaction Mastery… where you focus not only on ‘HOW’ to do a great consultation, but also on making sure you have every step of the client journey mapped out. Breaking The Salon Owners Groundhog Day

Finding your ‘CORE STORY’ and how it will keep attracting clients and staff to your salon, long after your ads have disappeared. Quality Isn’t Good Enough to Differentiate Your Salon Brand 33% of businesses fail within the first 5 years! People buy from people they like.. 87% of businesses with a stated purpose exceed beyond 5 years. If you are tempted to say, “quality” or, “ we’re friendly” or, “we give the best service”, thinking it will help to differentiate your brand, think again. Do you know how many times I’ve heard people say, “quality”, “we’re friendly”, or “we’re the best service”, is one of their distinguishing features of their salon? Fact is, I’ve been listening to salon owners tick off the reasons customers should buy from them. Over the span of hundreds of coaching calls and strategy sessions, it is safe to say that ,“quality” “we’re friendly”, or “we give the best service”, topped more than 90 percent of the lists of brag points. So, if everybody’s talking quality, it really doesn’t differentiate your salon brand. And to be effective in your advertising, you really must set your product or service apart from your competitors. To know your differentiation is to know your position. Positioning is the single most powerful concept in marketing, and it stipulates that a product or service must stand for ONLY ONE THING in the minds of your customers and prospects. Minds get confused. It’s only natural. We are barraged by messages every hour of every day. Imagine the minds in your market when they hear messages about “quality this” or “quality that.” Who would blame them for glazing over when that ad airs or shows up in print. ‘Quality’, ‘we’re friendly’ or ‘we give the best service’ is a given today. You simply must have it or you don’t deserve a place at the table. So “quality” is not the way to differentiate your brand. Whether you make a product or deliver a service, you do have a differentiation — a position — that your customers and prospects can legitimately rally around. To find it, you must dig deep.
