Most salon owners make the mistake of relying only on NEW CLIENTS to grow their business, yet it is REPEAT BUSINESS where the real money is made.  If you and your team focus on this one thing you are half way to having a very successful salon business.  The rest is just using the many different ways to get your clients to come back and spend money with you.   Every salon has quiet days. It’s how you tackle these quiet periods that can make the difference. Consider these 7 tips:   #1 If you know when you’re quiet then advertise a special offer around these times. DRESS FOR SUCCESS; EMPOWER YOURSELF AS A LEADER

According to Mark Twain, “Clothes Make a Man.”  But I think you would agree they make the woman, too. How you present yourself says a lot about you and your salon. In business, it really is true that you never get a second chance to make a good first impression. Dressing to impress does not mean you have to wear a suit, it simply means that you dress up. Your personal image impacts how others will perceive you – from your team and clients, to other salon owners. Do your competitors dress for success? If so, you need to keep up. If they’re not, then now’s your chance to take the lead. Remember, you are the representative of your brand which includes both yourself and your salon. Your image educates others on how you want to be approached. Every time you go out, you reflect an image that tells people how to treat you. Plus, your clothing influences your self-perception and confidence. When you feel good in your clothes, it impacts how you feel about and see yourself. Dressing better can have a positive impact on your overall mood. Being more positive, friendly, and polite are all traits that have shown to be impacted by dressing better. I have always lead dressed for success. I am known for my white hair, red lipstick, dressed in all black wearing mostly leather and/or lace. I stood out amongst my team. People would always ask, Is that the boss lady? I was a brand within the salon that has followed through into my coaching career. I feel confident and strong when I am dressed for work and my team see and feel it too. It reflects in my leadership style. People will take notice when you start dressing your best.  Experiment and notice how your team and your clients react to you when you dress for success. Communication with your Salon Team

“Do not listen with the intent to reply, listen with the intent to understand.” By Nicole McDonell – Coach/Mentor iSalon Coaching Communication with your team is one of the most important abilities of being a great leader in your Salon. A lack of communication skills has the potential to harm relationships with your team and you will be ineffective in understanding and leading your team. Let’s face it; everyone see’s reality differently and can interpret the same words very differently. Your job is to really work out exactly what they are trying to say and why. Communication with your team is the key to understanding and teaching your team. Only when you learn how to truly communicate effectively will you be able to understand and lead your team to profits. I have included some tips and trick below to help you start communicating better with your team. One of the most basic and important things to do in all conversations with your team members is to pause before replying. (A short pause of about 2-5 seconds). When you pause, you avoid the possibility of interrupting the team member if they are just taking a breath. Plus, it shows your team member that you are listening to them and processing what they have said by not jumping in with your own comments and opinions. It also ensures that you actually hear the speaker better. You will really understand what they are really saying with greater clarity. You also want to ask for clarification, “What do you mean?”. Then pause and wait…. The team member will then answer back with a lot more detail. You can also repeat back the team member’s words in your own words. This ensures you are both on the same page. “Let me see if I understand you.” What you are saying is? This shows that you are genuinely paying attention and making every effort to understand what is trying to be said or feelings explained. Listening builds trust. The more you listen to your team the more they will trust and believe in you. When you suspect, someone is not telling you the truth be direct and ask the million-dollar question and then be silent. It’s when that awkward silence happens it forces the other person to fill the silence. Often it is then that you will get the actual truth. I have used this tactic in many meeting and it is always a success. I have got a few unexpected answers but it really does save time by helping you get to the real truth quicker.   Owning a business is NOT about working your ass off for the sake of trying to squeeze out a living. It is also NOT about making tons of money at the expense of losing tons of life. It’s about maximising life, bettering your life and others on the way. So how can you charge more for your services and more bang for your buck? The staff MUST believe in your salon and want every client to leave with the best experience ever. Your salon has a culture. Believe it or not your salon has a culture, a group of people brought together around a common set of values and beliefs. Its not your services and products that bind your staff together, it not size and might that makes a salon strong, it’s the culture, the strong sense of beliefs and values that hold everyone together. When employees belong to the right salon it will guarantee your salons success. They will be working hard for you and for the salon. Clients will see this and feel this as soon as they arrive through your doors. This is when they will choose to belong to your journey or realise you have empty promises. Treat clients like they are your staff and staff like they are your clients Exceed clients expectations Have a great complaint policy in place Employ happy staff (people servers) Set up a client journey and role play this with your staff Repeat what works, and change what is broken Always look for a better way to do it. Price is what you pay, Value is what you get. If you offer your clients more value than they think they are paying they will feel that they are getting good value for money. I haven’t even talked a cost value yet. Because it doesn’t matter, all that matters is the perceived value to the client. If your clients are going to be happy with paying for your services and products, they must feel that the experience they receive is greater than the cost is to them. The secret to having a successful business is to know what your clients want and deliver it. Focus on clear, specific, and detailed solutions that solve your client’s problems. Clients that need a hair cut could get this done down the road at a $10 hair salon, or a client that needs a facial could get this done much cheaper than you charge. So why do so many clients pay different prices? Because they are getting far more than a haircut or a facial, it goes much deeper, on a financial, emotional, physical and spiritual level. They are connecting with people they like. And people always like to buy from people they like. They believe your story They like your salon culture They want to feel special They work hard and your salon is down time for them Going to your salon is an enjoyable experience Its relaxing and calming They feel younger They are more confident This is so much more than just a haircut or a facial don’t you think? Create a great experience and your clients will pay a premium for this. What’s the point of running a business if you cannot earn a darn good living from it, the problem is, too many salon owners just think about getting as many clients through the door as possible. Why not work on the clients you have? Look at how you can offer them a better experience in your salon, and charge a premium for this service.
