There is always a direct connection between diluted focus and a diluted bank account. He explains he has hit rock bottom and things have to change, and cannot go on like this, “I need to start to work on my business”, but I don’t know where to start”, his life is a train wreck, and he’s desperate. He feels defeated and embarrassed. This wasn’t always the case. He started out 10 years ago with just him and a few staff and year after year he grew. He was growing fast, making good money. The salon was always booked out and he grew his salon to a team of 12. The salon was taking close to a million dollars a year and Bruce paid himself a good wage for his efforts. In fact Bruce even started to work only a few days a week. He was riding hi and thought he could take on the world. Holidays and fast cars later, a few staff leaving and taking clients. He was still living a champagne lifestyle on a beer budget. The inevitable happened, for the first time ever his bills out weighed his takings. This is the danger of growing fast. You do not have the infrastructure, the strong foundation to rely on. Just take your eye off the ball for a single second and debt will creep in, so slowly you do not realize at first, not until its too late. Then you go through the three stages of despair that arise when your salons are in a state of collapse STAGE, 1 -DENIAL We deny were struggling, someone asks how your business is going and you say “Great we’re getting busier and busier” knowing things aren’t great and you’re losing money. But you’re afraid to admit it, because what will people think of you? What if your staff starts to doubt you? Will they leave? What if the clients find out, will they leave also? Only when the salon is on deaths door do we admit that were struggling. ENTER STAGE 2-ADDICTED TO STRESS For many salon owners the stress levels at this point have become a way of life. You wake up stressed. Go to bed stressed. Stress about being stressed. You actually become proud to be stressed and now when someone complains about there problems you offer your story that always starts with “well you think you are stressed, I …..” THE END STAGE 3- WHY DOES THIS ALWAYS HAPPEN TO ME Your salon, going into failure is actually completely out of your control. You know the one. The one that starts with why me, why can’t I get ahead, just once. Why is this happening to me? I can never just have a good break without a staff member leaving or a bill is due that I forgot about. Why me. This is when most people give in and put it into the too hard box, accepting that it will never get better and all the fight in them is almost gone. Bruce was in stage 1 he was in denial about why, he isn’t in dire straights but it was creeping up on him. He has to start looking into the business and get a grip with all that is happening. He is taking enough money, that’s for sure. He just needs to manage his finances and get his bills in order. That may mean some BIG decisions on his spending including staff. This sort of collapse creeps up on many salon owners over a slow period of time, it’s the death reaper, and you don’t know it’s happening until it’s too late. But at this stage it can quickly be turned around. But most salon owners continue to lie to themselves year after year, always behind the eight ball, the same thing they have been doing since day one. Nothing is on an upward trajectory except their blood pressure, debt and taxes. The hardest and the easiest things are sometimes staring you in the face. The easiest thing to do it take a day off from the salon collect all the evidence you have and go away in a quiet area and judge your salon on the facts you have, the answers in your computer, you know your expenses are
How to attract clients to your salon without looking cheap and nasty.

Clients are the livelihood of your salon and without clients your salon will eventfully close down. So this topic is very important to every salon owner. If your salon is not giving you the results you want it to, the first places to look are: How well you are doing to get attention with your posts or ads? How well do they perform to get the clients to call the salon? How many of the new clients that come into the salon stay around? What type of clients are you attracting? Consider these three facts: 1. Most salon owners cannot get people to visit their salon without discounting. 2. The average new client retention is 17%. 3. Most clients DO NOT choose a salon on price alone. So why do so many salon owners discount to attract clients, because that’s all they know! Imagine this, you see a hair salon discounting week after week after week. What’s the first thing you think? Cheap? Desperate? Not good? Average? Poor? Unskilled? Unprofessional? One thing for certain is that they ARE NOT experts, otherwise why would they discount. So let’s just take a breath here. I like discounts, I have been doing them for over 20 years in my salon. The difference is I did it a little cleverer. Look at Qantas and other big companies who happily discount but don’t look cheap. That’s because they have a plan. A system! With my private salons that I coach we use a system called Marketing Mastery. This is where we decide if we want to build a plan to fill a quiet day/week or month, or maybe a new stylist to the floor or even a newly qualified therapist. The key is to NEVER stop your marketing, EVER. But I’m not talking like the desperate salons do. Who are you trying to attract to your salon? One of the biggest mistakes I see salon owners make is that they try to attract the wrong client to their salons. This alone keeps them in the war zone and they never even see it coming. You have opened your salon with a set price that you want to charge the client. You are either high end, middle or low end. Firstly you need to know which one best suits you and how you work. In the hair and beauty service we charge for appointment slots. We charge time for money, that’s all. Let me explain: Fast, cheap, and good…pick (2) words to live by. The problem I see is that salon owners want to offer high end service but at a low price, they take too long on their services. Some salon owners want to charge high end for their salon but offer mediocre or poor service. The salons that get this combination right make money. A quick cutting only salon can make as much per hour as one of the big expensive fancy salons. They are just quick, and do more a day. But the end result (money in the till) is the same. Think about it this way. If you shop at Aldi you get a certain service, if you shop at Marks & Spencers you get another, if you shop at Coles another. They all make money, but you pay for what you get. No frills you want cheap and fast. Want more frills you move up a level. So my big question to you is this: Are you aiming at the right clients? Every day, we are subjected to literally thousands of marketing messages and promises – in your email, your Facebook newsfeed, plastered on billboards, on the radio, on TV and in your letterbox. Over the next few days I’m going to share with you why your salon might not be doing as well as it could and the fault lies with you. ☹️ Sorry I understand that as a salon owner you need clients. You have bills to pay….wages to meet. And yes, clients are the lifeblood of your business. But that does not mean you should get them by any means possible. Chasing clients will kill your business — fast. If clients are mice 🐭 then you have to decide if you want to be the cheese 🧀 or the cat 😼. Which one are you? Chasing kills respect As salon owners, we think our job is to attract clients any way we can. And for most of you, you chase them everywhere, with $1 foils, free colours, free gift vouchers, discounts here, money off there. Whatever it takes to get them in the salon. The problem with that kind of Attraction is it stinks of desperation. Let me change the subject for a moment… 🤔 Would you want to date/marry someone who is chasing you? 🤔 Or, someone who seems way too available? 🤔 Or, someone who is begging for your attention? The simple answer is NO! Well, the same rules apply in business. No one wants to work with someone who appears to be desperate. For starters, it undermines your credibility. If you are so good at what you do, why are you begging for work? Clients don’t like it.✅ Staff don’t like it. ✅ They lose respect for you. ✅ They lose respect for your value. When you chase clients – especially if you’re offering them freebies and/or reducing your prices – you put yourself in a negative position before you’ve even started.You need to be more like the cheese, 🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀 and that means positioning your salon as ‘the go to salon’ You as the expert! Then you can stop chasing. And start cashing in as clients come to you. Chasing is a recipe for crushing salon morale A client that you had to chase will cost you more than respect and money. They’ll cost you tons of your valuable time and effort. They’ll question everything. Your expertise. Your price. Your suggestions. They’ll fight you every step of the way because they don’t trust you, and that’s a recipe for absolute disaster. It is very difficult to get results for a client who doesn’t trust and respect you. The vicious circle will be complete. You beg. The client never really trusts you (or believed in your authority). The results suffer. The client then walks away leaving you with a bit of money but no rebooks or long-term client loyalty. Have you ever noticed that clients that come to you through a special offer or discount want the world for nothing? ✅They always complain. ✅They bring down the mood in the salon. ✅They bring you down. All the good work you have done to grow your salon can be destroyed in an instant with clients like this. You need to be more like the cheese, and that means positioning your salon as ‘the go to salon’ You as the expert! Then you can stop chasing. And start cashing in as clients come to you. Chasing takes you away from your current clients 🙈🙈 Do you know how many hours it takes create offers and posts to get clients in the door? Then to respond to those clients, sending them discounts and vouchers. Answering the questions, and there’s always questions with these clients. 🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️ Because while you’re chasing down new clients, you’re not working on providing added value for your current clients. The kind of value that makes them want to stick around. And here’s a little secret: clients who stick around are the happiest and most profitable to your salon. 💰💰💰💰💰 It’s a lot easier and cheaper to keep a client than to land a new one. But if you’re not providing anything new, anything of value, they’ll move on, I can guarantee it. And for every client you lose, you have to get find 2-3 to replace them, especially if you’re discounting your prices. ☹️☹️☹️☹️ So how do you get clients without chasing? You need to get them to come to you. And it’s easier than you think. You have something of value to offer (and if you don’t, you might want to question why a client should choose your salon in the first place) Figure out what is unique to your business.👉 Your core story . 👉 Write it down. 👉 Record it. 👉 Blog it. 👉 Get it on video. 👉 Get it out there. Publicly. Where everyone can see it. 👀 👀 👀 👀 👀 You need to be more like the cheese, and that means positioning your salon as ‘the go to salon’You as the expert! Then you can stop chasing.
